| Description | This work shows an idyllic rural scene, common to landscape artists working in the eighteenth century (and indeed, more recently). A still, deep lake is depicted, fringed by autumnal trees. Cattle have been driven to the lake to water there. The work appears to be a rather generic kind of landscape, and may have been a ‘furnishing piece', that is, an older version of the images now bought from Ikea, meant for a pleasant decoration, but without any inherent statement about the person who purchased it. The dilapidated state of this work is further evidence of the genre of the work. | |
