| Description | Berchem, or Berghem as he was also known, gained an excellent reputation in his own lifetime for his landscapes. This painting is traditionally attributed to him as it shows similarities to his other works. While the artist has pictured a pleasant rural landscape, he has also taken care to populate the landscape with appropriate figures and animals. | |

| Notes | Nicolaes Berchem studied under his father, Pieter Claesz. initially, and then was taught by Jan van Goijen, N. Moiejaert, De Grebber, Jan Wils (whose daughter he married) and Weenix. His style evolved throughout his studies. Paintings by Berchem can be found in most of the major collections in Europe.
