| Description |
Wild and domestic fowl are carefully positioned in a landscape framed by a tree to the left. The most colourful birds occupying the foreground include a pochard, domestic ducks with white pompons, and a lapwing. An ornamental pigeon flies above in the centre, and chickens are seen in the background. Such images were popular with wealthy burghers who lived as landed aristocrats on estates in the country where they kept exotic and native fowl. Melchior de Hondecoeter was the pre-eminent specialist in this genre. |
