| Description | A slow-flowing river, seen from a bird's-eye view, recedes towards a watermill in the middle ground. The subject- matter and the free handling of paint recall other work by Fritz Thaulow, an important Norwegian painter, who was influenced by French Realist painting and to some extent by Impressionism. The motif of the mill recurs in other paintings, surch as The Watermill, (about 1900, Harvard University Art Museum) and Mill Scene (about 1885-90, St Louis Art Museum). Thaulow painted chiefly river scenes, but also poetic nocturnes, townscapes, harbour scenes and bridges. | |
