| Description | Guillaumin is one of the least known painters associated with Impressionism. He exhibited at the Salon des Refusés of 1863 and in many other Impressionist exhibitions. This work depicts a view up the river Loing towards the bridge of Moret. The expressive handling of paint reveals the influence of Van Gogh, who became a close friend in 1887. Guillaumin painted a number of similar views, e.g. Moret-sur-Loing (1902, Tate Gallery). Two other related paintings both entitled Le Vieux Samois (about1900) are included in the catalogue by Serret, G. and Fabiani, D., Armand Guillaumin 1841-1927 (Paris,1971, no. 502 and no. 503). | |
