Description The dead Christ on the cross is illuminated from an undefined light-source and silhouetted against a dark blue sky. The nocturnal sky corresponds to the gospels' description (Matthew, Mark and Luke) of a ‘darkness over all the land' during the crucifixion of Christ. Three angels hover above Him. Mary and St John the Evangelist stand behind the cross. In the middle ground figures are seen departing from the site. The inclusion of the building in the background is unusual. This is the Castel Sant' Angelo (Rome), the prison where St Peter was incarcerated before his crucifixion.

Acquisition Details Given by Ninian, 25th Brodie of Brodie, 1980

Notes Cornelis van Poelenburgh, a Dutch painter who trained in Utrecht, was in Italy from about 1617 to1625. He thus had first- hand knowledge of the Castel Sant' Angelo depicted in this painting. His works are typically small-scale with biblical or mythological figures set in Arcadian landscapes, often with antique remains.
