Description Subject and composition are reminiscent of the work of Jan Brueghel, to whom this painting was previously attributed. The scene is carefully framed by the receding line of buildings on the left and a river on the right: a crowd watches a theatrical performance on a makeshift stage set up under a tall tree in the centre. Other figures sell foodstuff, a woman makes pancakes, couples dance and flirt, and children play with hoops. The white swans on the river in the right foreground add a peaceful note to the busy scene.
