| Description |
A woman carrying a basket on her head crosses a narrow bridge, the height of which is accentuated by the low vantage point. An Italianate light saturates the scene, imparting a glow to the left river-bank and the supporting beams of the bridge. Brilliant reflections shimmer in the gently flowing river. Naturalism is combined with an interest in curving, twisting forms: the winding stream is echoed in the undulating path, the gnarled tree contrasts with the tall sinuous tree. The motif of the precarious bridge silhouetted against the sky has its roots in Flemish painting and the prints after Roelandt Savery and Pieter Stevens. |
