|Date Earliest||probably about 1655|
|Date Latest||probably about 1675|
|Description||This portrait by an artist in the circle of the Italian painter Carlo Maratti, or Maratta (1625-1713), shows an unknown young man dressed in black and wearing a lace jabot. He holds up a ring in his right hand, which suggests the portrait was commissioned in connection with the sitter's impending marriage.
Maratti was a hugely successful and influential painter. Although he painted many religious pictures, he is best known as a portraitist.
