| Description | This dark painting shows a landscape with a woody foreground, in which is seen a group of travellers. Beyond, contrasting with the dark foreground, is a lighter desolate plateau, and further back the view is closed by the sharp forms of a range of mountains covered in snow. The painter has placed the horizon line quite low in the painting, in order to give prominence to a cloudy sky in the background and a dramatically wind-swept tree in the foreground. Through the use of colour, the artist created an illusion of depth and gelid air. | |
