Artist Goyen, Jan van (Dutch painter and printmaker, 1596-1656)
Date 1639 (dated)

Description Jan van Goyen was a popular and prolific landscape and marine painter of the first half of the seventeenth century. His work was avidly sought after in the later eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by English collectors, particularly among those in East Anglia where there remains a strong topographical affinity with the Low Countries. Van Goyen often reworked successful compositions for different patrons, perhaps changing the weather conditions or background details. The present painting bears comparison with three other works by the artist at the National Gallery, one of which (NG 2580), dated 1638, uses the same device of a rowing boat daubed with the artist's signature in the foreground.
