Artist Attributed to circle of Dolci, Carlo (Italian painter, 1616-1687)
Date Earliest possibly about 1630
Date Latest possibly about 1687
Description This is an unusual subject found mainly in 17th century painting. The 'Earthly Trinity' are the Child Jesus, the Virgin and St Joseph together following Christ's return from preaching in the Temple. This version, attributed to Carlo Dolci (1616-1687) does indeed reflect the his smooth style, especially in the figures. However, the lush landscape in the background is quite unusual for this artist. Nor is it a copy as no works by Dolci of this theme are known. Based on the technique the work should be placed in the 17th century and attributed to Dolci's circle.
