Collection Perth Museum and Art Gallery
Artist Boudin, Eugène Louis (French painter, 1824-1898)
Date Earliest possibly about 1873
Date Latest possibly about 1896
Signed yes
Description Boudin visited Trouville regularly from 1862 onwards. Style, subject and format of this wetly and loosely painted picture recalls Voiliers aux Environs de Trouville (1873, private collection). To the right a boat lies behind a spit of wet sand and seaweed. The boat's blue painted rim demarcates the low horizon, whilst brown and white sails form a gleaming triangle against the dark clouds above. Sails, ochre sand, and the reflections on the water provide an interesting play of light and colour, contrasting with the greys and blues in the sky. Foreground colours are picked up again in the middle-ground.
