| Description | The style of this painting bears many similarities to that of Girolamo da Treviso. Other aspects allude to artists such as Giorgione, Cima and Bellini, the last particularly in the detailed outdoor setting. The painting is certainly the work of a Northern Italian artist, and was possibly painted in the 1520s. The image depicts the popular theme of the rest on the flight into Egypt, which allowed painters of religious subjects to demonstrate their skill in landscape. Behind the familiar icon of the Virgin and Child, the delicately composed scenery conveys the narrative of the Holy Family's journey out of Bethlehem. | |
