| Description | Eugène Verboeckhoven was one of the masters of nineteenth-century Belgian painting, specialising in animal painting. He acted as a mentor to many artists, among them Alexander Daiwaille. Collaboration in paintings was common practice and Verboeckhoven often animated the landscapes of others with his finely observed livestock. In this instance they form the central focus within Daiwaille's equally naturalistic rustic setting. The style is reminiscent of the seventeenth-century Netherlandish landscapists, whose influence experienced a revival in the first half of the nineteenth century. | |
