This is one of a number of paintings of living animals at the Royal College of Surgeons by the Swiss artist Jacques-Laurent Agasse that were commissioned by Lord Merton. The animals are mainly shown in profile and although painted in a manner that reflects that the works are painted from life, are intended to be seen as scientific records. |
