| Description | Thorwaldsen was a Danish sculptor (1770-1843), active in Italy. After the death of Antonio Canova in 1822, he became the foremost neo-classical sculptor in Rome. The original version of this painting is now in the Thorwaldsen Museum of Copenhagen. Thorwaldsen is depicted here with the modelled bust of Vernet. At a banquet to honour Vernet's departure from Rome Thorwaldsen was to present Vernet with a laurel crown placed on the statue, but Vernet placed the crown on Thorwaldsen instead, stating 'there it is now in its right place'. | |
