Description This type of landscape with a setting suggestive of the Roman campagna, a classical looking villa, and timeless figures within it, was extremely popular during the seventeenth century. Dughet was apprenticed to Poussin, who had married Dughet's sister. Poussin encouraged him to select fine views in the countryside around Rome and insisted that he should master the rudiments of figure drawing. The deep and lasting affection between master and pupil explains why Dughet became known as Gaspard Poussin. Most writers have divided Dughet's career into three periods. His first landscapes being described as 'a little dry,' in his second period he developed a more learned style, closer to that of his master; with his late works being more intimate and original. Dughet enjoyed great prestige in Britain, and his paintings were enthusiastically collected there, especially those from the last period, of which the Salford painting could be a copy. He became one of the foremost models for British landscape painters, admired above all for his selection of picturesque motifs, his realism and the lucid structure of his works.

Notes Previously attributed to Nicholas Poussin and printed as such in the catalogue of the gift. However, A.C. Sewter (Dept. History of Art, Manchester University), in 1952, considered it more likely for this work to have been painted by Gaspard Poussin (Dughet). The work is now considered to be by a lesser hand working under the influence of Gaspard.
