Description The German painter Ernst Karl Georg Zimmermann depicts a landscape with an open-fronted cottage looking out on to a calm sea dotted with ships. On the right a bare-footed fisherman is seated on ground with a basketfulof fish at his side. Beside a table another fishermen sits with a baby on his knee. In front of him stands a woman. In the background two fishermen look out to sea. Beneath the sentiment of these popular scenes always lurks the danger of the sea which may mean that both woman and child will lose their loved ones. Zimmermann studied first under his father and became later a pupil of Wilhelm von Diez. He is best known for his genre scenes and portraits.
