| Description | The Belgian artist, Henri Jacque Bource, studied at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1875 and is known for his history, genre and religious paintings. This is a typical genre scene on the beach at Scheveningen, long a favourite site for Dutch painters. During the second half of the nineteenth century the Netherlands were a very popular destination. Several foreign artists travelled to the Netherlands to paint fishing villages, towns and provincial areas and their picturesque inhabitants, for example Max Liebermann and Claude Monet. The painting is a typical example of Realism, an art movement in which artists rejected the Romantic subjectivism and and tried to depict ordinary subjects and people in naturalistic settings. | |
