| Description | Le Sidaner travelled to Bruges during the month of July 1898, and he returned for a whole year in 1899. Following his first trip to Bruges, Le Sidaner stopped painting large groups of people and concentrated on a more intense use of light, later to be explored by painters belonging to the Symbolist movement. In this painting, the over-proportioned belfry of Bruges' cathedral dominates the canvas, as a dark vertical element at the end of the square, almost empty of figures. The lights at the sides of the entrance to the cathedral and those which appear behind the windows of the houses facing the square diminish the sense of desolation given by the sole tower against the sky. | |
