| Description | This copy of a painting by Meindart Hobbema represents a watermill and a pool on the left in a landscape with trees and cottages. On the right side two peasants watch a men in a red coat, who is moving a tree trunk. There are several paintings by Hobbema which depicting this watermill, but from different angles. Hobbema lived and worked in Amsterdam all his life. He was Jacob van Ruisdaels' most talented pupil and follower. He was also influenced by Salomon van Ruisdael, Cornelis Vroom, and perhaps Anthonie van Bossum. Hobbema's favoured motifs are water mills, forest scenes and fairly flat landscapes. In 1668 his work almost ground to a halt when he married the kitchen maid of an Amsterdam burgomaster and he received the well-paid position of a wine gauger of the Amsterdam octroi. A wine gauger measures the amount of wine in the vats of vintners and wine consumers. Hobbema retained this new position until the end of his life and this probably prevented him from painting more than occasionally. | |
