| Description | Israëls painted numerous scenes of peasants in their daily trials and efforts, and many of these were clearly influenced by Rembrandt. In this painting, three children, the oldest carrying the youngest, are standing inside a decaying and empty room, unhappily looking at it. Brown tones convey a mood of poverty and sadness to the painting, which is enlightened by a ray of sunlight coming in from the right. As this painting is unsigned and the paint is applied straight onto the unprimed millboard, this could be a preparatory study. | |
