| Description | Mengs was widely regarded in his day as Europe's greatest painter. The sitter is portrayed with his bust slightly turned towards his left and his face turned towards the viewer. The man is wearing a fine burgundy velvet robe with a fur collar on top of a white shirt. Previously thought to be a portrait of the landscape painter Richard Wilson, the painting appears to be identical to one of the artist's father in the Art Institiute of Chicago. | |

| Measurements | 62.6 x 48.8 cm cm (estimate) | |
| Material | oil on canvas | |
| Acquisition Details | Given by J. G. Graves 1935. | |
| Notes | The painting was previously recorded as Portrait (Richard Wilson?). However, the sitter does not have very much in common with the only other existing portrait of Richard Wilson by A. R. Mengs (see Roettgen S., Anton Raphael Mengs 1728-1779 and His British Patrons, London, 1993, cat. no. 18, pp. 83-85). This painting seems to be a identical to a painting in the Art Institute of Chicago catalogued as Portrait of His Father by Anton Raphael Mengs. | |
