| Description | Augustus Heyn was a German genre painter, who travelled extensively around Germany, the Tyrol and Italy, before choosing to settle in Munich, where the Shipley oil was painted. This beautifully detailed work takes its inspiration from the popular tavern scenes of the Dutch seventeenth century, such as were produced by artists like Adriaen van Ostade. The painting encourages speculation as to what the three old men are so busily discussing. | |
