Description This painting is copied from a known composition by Melchior de Hondecoeter, an important seventeenth-century Dutch painter of birds and still lives. His lively and decorative style was immensely popular with collectors, and he was much imitated, even in his own lifetime. The composition of the Shipley painting is entitrely typical of Hondecoeter's oeuvre, with the accent on the reds, the tree trunk at the side, and the distant vista.

Notes Three other verisons of this composition by Hondecoeter are known to exist. They are: a) a version sold at Christie's 4 January 1977, including a squirrel on the right and two sheep on the left; b) a version sold at the Mark van Wraay sale, Amsterdam, 7 October, 1947; c) a version sold at the Weinmuller sale, Madrid, 24 September 1970. Of these versions it is almost impossible to know which was the original Hondecoeter, although the version sold at Christie's in 1977 appears to be the most likely. According to Professor Ingrar Bergstrom, this is an early work.
