| Description |
Three-quarter length portrait of Richard Hill. He wears a long wig, a velvet coat and a swathe of red drapery over a white shirt. He is shown with one hand on his hip and the other resting on a classical style plinth with a landscape background in the right hand distance. Richard Hill was born at Hawkstone in Shropshire and educated at Shrewsbury School. He was Deputy Paymaster to the army during the Dutch War in the 1690s and subsequently in the diplomatic service during the War of the Spanish Succession. He inherited the estate at Hawkstone in 1700 (the date of this portrait). |
