Attributed to Dutch School , Portrait of an Unidentified Man

Core Record

Title Portrait of an Unidentified Man
Collection St Bartholemew´s Hospital Museum, London
Artist Attributed to Dutch School
Date Earliest possibly about 1750
Date Latest possibly about 1750
Description A half-length portrait of an unidentified young man, wearing black clothes and a white collar, his right hand upon his breast. He appears to be ill, or wasting away, so it has traditionally been assumed that he is a patient of the hospital, though this may not necessarily be an effect intended by the artist.
Current Accession Number X/7/70
Subject portrait
Measurements 29 x 22 cm (estimate)
Material oil on board
Acquisition Details Unknown.
Notes The painting is not recorded in the 1948-49 insurance valuations. It was found in the stores in 1973, when an x-ray was made, revealing that the present subject has been painted over an earlier portrait, also of the 'Dutch School'. Presently hung in the James Gibbs flat.
Rights Owner St Bartholomew's Hospital Archives and Museum
Author Malcolm Barclay
