Description This painting was previously attributed to Gaspar Dughet. However, Boisclair rejects the attribution of this painting to Dughet and suggests Jan Frans van Bloemen as a more likely attribution. Jan Frans van Bloemen was born in Antwerp and worked in Rome where he was influenced by the landscapes of Dughet. Known as 'Orizzonte', he was patronised by the Roman aristocracy. His works are represented in many museums and private collections throughout Europe.

Notes Engraved by M. Dubourg, 1809 after a drawing by W. M. Craig, published by Edward Orme. The Torrie Collection picture may be the one formerly in the Altieri Palace, Rome (Macmillan, D., A Catalogue of the The Torrie Collection, University of Edinburgh, 2004, p. 24). A related version is in Rome (Galleria Gasparrini, Boisclair no. R. 203).

Waagen thought this painting 'poetical in composition' but considered that the 'treatment of the trees and the colouring of the figures, especially of the brick-red tone, [led him] to consider it a very beautiful picture by Julius Frans van Bloemen, called Orizzonte' (Waagen, G., Treasures of Art in Great Britain, 1854-7, London, vol 3, p. 275, no. 41). Boisclair rejects the attribution to Dughet and also favours Jan Frans van Bloemen. Boisclair notes that both versions are similar to a Tempête by Van Bloemen in the Galerie Doria-Pamphilj. The figure of the man in the turban also occurs in another landscape by van Bloemen and the dog is also seen in a painting by Van Bloemen (See Busiri Vici, A., 1974, fig. 180 and cat no 105). The provenance of this painting has been previously confused with a painting in the Mahon collection (Boisclair, no. R.44) (Boisclair, M-N., Gaspard Dughet, Arthena, Paris, 1986, cat no. 475, p. 307, R. 32).
