Description Deutsch studied first in Vienna, then travelled to Paris, where he settled, becoming a French citizen. His subjects attest to the fact that he travelled extensively in the Middle East. However, the orientalist genre at which the artist excelled portrays a culture where little has changed, often to the point where the peoples are depicted as ignorant and uncivilised. Thus Europe's imperialist policies were seen to be justified. The vibrant blue of the schoolmaster's smock dominates the otherwise earth-toned colouration of the composition. The scene is flooded with natural daylight, which enters through the window with iron-work detailing in an Islamic star design, behind the schoolmaster.
