| Description | In the foreground several sheep are huddled resting; an old shepherd sits with his dog to the right. The landscape background is reminiscent of southern Italy with ruins in the middle-distance to the right, and a hilltop village to the left. The present painting forms a pair with Landscape with Shepherd Boy and Sheep (BATVG:P:1900.14). | |

| Notes | As well as six paintings (including the pendant to the present work), Mrs Arabella Roxburgh bequeathed almost £10,000 for scholarships, an art gallery and/or library for Bath. The endowment greatly assisted the foundation of the Victoria Art Gallery in 1897. Mrs Roxburgh published a volume of poetry entitled Gleanings from Nature, Edinburgh, 1869. | |
