Description A busy scene of village revelry on a feast-day. The composition is symmetrically arranged within a long rectangular format. In the centre ground, before a tavern, a number of people stand or sit on benches around a large table which is laden with food. To the centre-left, two couples dance, to the centre-right, four men stand about talking. To the far left of the composition, people sit drinking outside another tavern. In the background more people enjoy the festivities, to the right one group have gathered outside a church, which flies the Dutch flag. There are many incidental details.

Notes Ernest J. White (d. 1938) was a lawyer and long-serving Liberal member of Bath city council. He is noted for his campaign to re-open the Pump Room and Roman Baths. His bequest included eight further works which are listed in an attachment to a letter from the deceased's own company of solicitors to the gallery curator, dated December 2, 1938. The list includes the present work: ‘Large oil painting Dutch Festival by Nicholes Van Kessel'.
