| Notes | The original was commissioned from Raphael in 1518 by Pope Leo X as a gift for Queen Claude of France, and is thought to have been executed largely by the workshop. It is believed that the Queen's recent maternity was commemorated by the angel who crowns the Virgin with flowers, which are arranged as a coronet in the original composition. In the Victoria Art Gallery version, the second angel to the rear of the group appears to have been painted out; other changes from the original include the virtually plain background. For the original by Raphael, see for example S. F. Pagden & M. A. Zancan Raffaello: Catalogo Completo, Florence, 1989, p. 137, cat. no. 86 Mrs Williams of Torquay donated a number of works to the Victoria Art Gallery following the death of her husband. Other objects were given to Bristol Art Gallery. |
