| Description | This painting is considered to be by a follower of the successful Italian landscape painter, Francesco Zuccarelli. It was probably painted by someone associated with the artist rather than being a later work, a conclusion supported by several pieces of information. Although during his lifetime Zuccarelli's paintings were extremely popular in England, after his death in 1774 people began to criticise the frivolity and extravagance of his idealised classical landscapes. Furthermore, provenance information found on the back of the painting demonstrates that by 1816 the work was owned by an English politician and army major who died in India. | |
