|Title||A Dutch Canal|
|Alternative Title||Bruxelles, Le Bassin du Commerce; The Commercial Dock, Brussels|
|Collection||Culture and Sport Glasgow (Museums): The Burrell Collection|
|Artist||Boudin, Eugène Louis (French painter, 1824-1898)|
Although throughout his life Boudin continued to paint on his native Normandy coast, almost every year he spent a few months further afield. He first travelled abroad to Belgium in 1849. Because of the Franco-Prussian War he again left France in 1871. Encouraged by a local dealer he visited Brussels and Anvers because of the promise of easy sales of paintings just like this one.
Boudin would have painted this small work quickly. He would have been seated on a collapsible stool, directly facing his 'motif' - a dock busy with ships, if not with people. The many narrow buildings lining the dockside would have helped him 'frame' his picture - the strong verticals of the ship's masts balancing the horizontals of the water and the buildings. Like the Impressionists he paints reflections but the distant smoke is the only hint of movement in the work.
