| Description |
The sitter is Sir George Skene (1619-1707), Provost of Aberdeen from 1676-85. His head and shoulders are facing three quarters left, while he looks forward. He wears a wig, a brown robe and a white neckcloth. His left hand is visible holding his robe. The artist, Sir John de Medina, came from a Spanish family that had settled in the Low Countries. He came to London in 1686 and adopted the style of the fashionable Sir Godfrey Kneller. Competition may have led him to Scotland, where he settled in Edinburgh c.1693/4. There his version of the London style attracted the patronage of much of the Scottish nobility. |
