| Description |
Van Goyen was a pioneer of Dutch realistic landscape painting. He settled in the Hague around 1632 where he remained until his death. In scale and achievement, this is one of van Goyen's most successful river scenes. He played an innovatory role in the depiction of the effects of weather and atmosphere. Unlike Italianate Dutch painters such as Berchem, van Goyen looked to nature rather than other art, providing inspiration for artists such as Constable. |
