| Description |
Fantin-Latour's still-life paintings were particularly popular with English buyers. Although in many respects as austere in observation as the artist's portraits, his flower paintings, such as this one, received greater interest from Victorian patrons wishing to decorate their homes. |

The painting may have been exhibited in the fifth exhibition of the Society of French Artists in 1872 as no. 25 (information kindly provided by Martin Hopkinson 2012). |
