| Description |
This painting probably represents a scene of smuggling. Protected by the rocks on the coast, a group of men unload the cargo from a ship which is moored between the cliffs. Although it was considered a Dutch seventeenth-century work, the subject and the style are closer to those of the late eighteenth century. This seascape may well date to that period, when figure of the smuggler became an appealing subject to Romantic writers and painters. |
