Description The German painter Abraham Mignon specialised in flower-pieces that show increasingly complex pyramidal compositions, often with gardens in the background. In this work, which was produced in mid-career, a red poppy is surrounded by grapes, peaches and plums laid on slate, with butterflies and snails. Mignon's elaborate and sensual still life paintings are heavily indebted to the work of his master Jan Davidsz. de Heem, whose studio he joined after following Jacob Marrel from Frankfurt to Utrecht.
