Title Landscape with a Temple and an Artist Sketching
Collection Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle
Artist Petit, Pierre Joseph (French painter, active 1785-1819)
Date 1792 (dated)
Signed yes
Description This classical landscape may be reminiscent of the Grand Tour, with a young man sketching in front of a temple. However the practise of the Grand Tour was becoming less frequent around he time this painting was done, so the man sketching may in fact be an artist training in Italy. It is also possible that Pierre Joseph Petit may have wanted to represent himself in this fantasy landscape. A painter of landscapes and architectural views, he studied under Huet and exhibited at the Salon between 1791 and 1819.
