Vollon was born in Lyon in 1833, and studied there at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the period 1850-52. In 1859 Vollon established himself in Paris, along with Bovin and Ribot. In the 1860s he was clearly a promising young artist and showed three works at the 1863 Salon des Refusés, along with many other advanced artists. This work, with its rough handling anticipates the work of Cézanne, in particular La Maison du Pendu. Vollon's successful career was confirmed when he was appointed to the jury of 1900 International Exhibition in Paris, but he died in the same year. |
