Description Even though the date next to the artist's signature appears to be either 1805 or 1808, this picture was probably exhibited at the Salon of 1802 under the title Un portrait d'enfant jouant avec un chien. The figure of the boy is in relatively good condition but that of the dog is damaged and has undergone considerable alteration, either by the artist himself or by a restorer at a later date. The group of buildings in the background is Italianate in style.

Notes This painting was listed as no. 584 in John Bowes' catalogue, as 'Portrait of a young Boy, Seated on the back of a large Dog, signed Fleury, 1803'. The date next to the signature appears to be either 1805 or 1808. Robert Rosenblum suggested in a letter dated 4 April 1988 that this painting was Un portrait d'enfant jouant avec un chien, shown at the 1802 Salon. Antoine Claude Fleury exhibited at the Salon between 1795 and 1822.
