Tibout Retgers portrayed this unknown young woman in 1749, at the time when he was starting to develop a more personal manner after training under Jan Maurits Quinkhard.

She holds a small book closed in her right hand while she looks at the viewer. Her gesture introduces the suggestion of a narrative that enlivens the portrait.
