| Description |
Although Hippolyte Adam is mainly known for his portraits and figure paintings, this view demonstrates his accomplishment as a landscape artist. The Hôpital Saint Louis is shown beyond the Canal Saint Martin, which runs to the east of the Parisian Gare de l'Est. Founded in 1607, the hospital still functions, although its setting is now built up and the hospital is no longer visible from the far side of the canal. The hills in the distance, traditionally quarried for their gypsum deposits used in plaster of Paris, now form part of the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont which was laid out in 1866-67. |

Acquired as an unidentified view by an unknown French artist, the subject and author were identified thanks to a similar composition at the Musée Carnavalet, Paris, (24.5 x 32.2 cm) in which the morning light is hazier. The picture at the Musée Carnavalet was acquired from the sale of Emile Adan [sic], who was possibly a descendent of the artist. Jean-Marie Bruson, of the Musée Carnavalet, confirmed that the hand is the same in both paintings. |
