Description Godfried Schalcken (1643-1706) trained under the Dutch master Gerrit Dou, and became a specialist in one of Dou's subjects, the candlelit scene. Schalcken came to England following William of Orange's coronation and painted many portraits of the English court. This painting is a typical piece showing his interest in the light effects of flame in a darkened room. The subject is St Peter, recognisable by the keys he carries, which symbolise Christ's charge to Peter and the belief that he kept the keys to heaven.
