| Description |
The Frugal Meal was originally entitled Intérieur de village. Under this title it was listed in the sales records of the Hague branch of Goupil art-dealers and exhibited for the first time at the 1876 Paris Salon. The critics praised Israëls' choice of this simple topic. One of them was especially impressed by the charming way in which the painter depicted the children; separated from their parents and absorbed in their own world. The next year, when the painting was exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, it carried the present title. In the Netherlands however, the painting was known as Schoenmakersfamilie aan het middagmaal, literally 'the cobbler's family at the midday meal'. This title was presumable assigned by the artist himself. The reference to a cobbler's family makes it likely that the interior depicted is a cottage in the Brabant village of Dongen. This village inspired Israëls' several versions of an artisan's family having dinner. |
