Description This half-figure portrait of a Spanish gentleman in black doublet with stiff collar seated, in characteristic pose, at a table on which lies a palette and brushes was engraved for the collector Sir William Stirling Maxwell's book Annals of the Artists of Spain. The sitter holds a quill pen in right hand, poised above an open book. The title line of this book, although nowadays not completely legible, refers to the painting treatise Diálogos de la pintura su defensa, origin, essencia, definicion, modos y diferencias (Dialogues on Painting) that he had published in 1633.
