| Description |
Jordaens painted this scene several times. He was famous for being a painter who looked to the great Italian masters for his training and ideas, and their reliance on the classical tradition and production of historical subjects undoubtedly affected his own output. The famous Dutch biographer Houbraken noted in his Life of Jordaens that the young artist copied works by Annibale Carracci, Titian, Veronese and Jacopo Bassano, before mastering the bold manner of Rubens (Houbraken I:156). Jordaens demonstrated a thorough knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology and was also fully conversant with Cesare Ripa, the great Italian emblematist. The copy at Fairfax House after Jordaens demonstrates the artist's popularity: several such copies of his work must be in collections around Europe. It also shows that the copyist was keen to share in some of the reflected glory from Jordaens' reputation as a painter of ‘serious' art. |
