| Description |
Whereas Bonaventura Peeters was essentially a Flemish artist, the Dutch tradition of marine painting was far more established. Paintings like this one reveal the influence of the naturalistic style of the Dutch artist Simon de Vlieger who may have been Peeters's teacher. The painting shows ships coming into harbour in a storm - an armed galleon anchored on the right and a Dutch buss on the left. In the background is a two-masted vessel bearing a Dutch flag. The emphasis of the work, however, is very much on the dramatic effect of the crashing waves, the rugged cliffs and menacing sky. |
